In March, the Grover Beach City Council formally approved a pair of ordinances for medical marijuana businesses to operate in the city. During the meeting, the council made a last-minute change decreasing the number of dispensaries that will be allowed to open in the city from four to two.
Applicants for the two permits include local medical marijuana sellers and businesses from throughout the state. City officials plan to interview the applicants and rate applicants over the next few weeks.
In early 2018, the two dispensaries are expected to open their doors. At least initially, the Grover Beach dispensaries will only serve medical marijuana patients.
It is anticipated that once the state of California begins licensing recreational marijuana shops in Jan. 2018, Grover Beach may permit pot businesses that cater to all adults, rather than just medical patients.
The Grover Beach Police Department plans to hire a detective who will monitor the pot shops and help them stay in compliance with city rules pertaining to odor, safety, security and other issues.
On Sept. 5, the city council will discuss marijuana dispensaries and likely announce the two winning permit applications.
