SLO man breaks into home and beats up elderly woman

Thomas Terrell

A heavyset 56-year-old man barged into the home of an 82-year-old woman Tuesday night and repeatedly punched the elderly lady, according to the San Luis Obispo Police Department.

Around 10:30 p.m., the woman, who lives in a residential building in the 900 block of Monterey Street, heard a commotion outside her front door and went to check on the noise. When she opened the door, San Luis Obispo resident Thomas Terrell pushed his way inside, forced the woman on the ground and began punching her, police said.

Several neighbors heard the victim’s screams and came to help. The neighbors managed to stop the attack and restrain Terrell until police arrived.

An ambulance transported the victim to the hospital, where she received treatment for lacerations and a concussion. Doctors later released her.

Officers booked Terrell in San Luis Obispo County Jail on charges of first degree burglary, elder abuse, threats to commit a crime of violence and an enhancement of causing great bodily injury to a person over 70. Terrell remains in jail with his bail set at $50,000, according to the county sheriff’s office website.

The sheriff’s site lists Terrell as being 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing 300 pounds.
