Shandon man facing five years in prison for deadly DUI wreck

A 32-year-old Shandon man is expected to receive a five-year prison sentence for a fatal crash he caused while driving under the influence near Creston.

Eusebio Ruiz-Luis pleaded no contest on Monday to charges of DUI and vehicular manslaughter. He had previously pleaded not guilty.

On July 23, Ruiz-Luis was driving a 2000 Ford Expedition northbound on Creston Road north of Highway 41 at an unknown speed. Ruiz-Luis lost control of his vehicle, which rolled over multiple times and came to a rest on its wheels on the east shoulder of the road.

Ruiz-Luis’s passenger, 31-year-old Artemio V. Pacheco, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Ruiz-Luis emerged from the crash with minor scrapes and cuts.

Investigators stated Ruiz-Luis was driving with a BAC of .10 percent or higher.

Ruiz-Luis’s sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 11.
