Deputies watch as student plunges off cliff in Isla Vista

Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s deputies observed a 19-year-old Santa Barbara City College student run and jump over a fence and then fall off a cliff Saturday night in Isla Vista.

Anthony Palleschi landed on a beach and apparently suffered major head trauma, according to the sheriff’s office. It is unclear what caused him to leap off the cliff.

At about 10:30 p.m., Palleschi was standing in Walter Capps Park in the 6700 block of Del Playa Drive, where a 390-foot long wood and chain-link fence serves as a barrier between the park and the cliffs above the ocean. After Palleschi hurdled the barrier and fell off the cliff, emergency personnel rushed to the beach, where they found him face down and unresponsive in rising surf.

Responders moved Palleschi away from the surf and then transported him to Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara. Palleschi’s current condition is unclear.

Authorities had yet to determine whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the incident.
