A 29-year-old Santa Maria man was lying in a tunnel under Highway 101 near Nipomo for an unknown reason on Thursday, and a heavy-duty pickup truck ran over him. The Santa Maria man suffered injuries but survived.
Oren Glen Canfield, 66, was driving a Ford F-550 less than 20 mph when it ran over Cody Charles Reynolds, who was lying on a concrete surface inside the tunnel south of Nipomo, according to the CHP. Reynolds suffered abrasions to his right side and possibly fractured his right arm.
Canfield told investigators that he did not see anything in the tunnel as he drove through, but he felt his left rear wheel go over something. Canfield did not stop at first, but he later returned to the scene, saw a backpack and heard a person yelling.
CHP officers said Reynolds crawled up an embankment to southbound Highway 101 and waved for help. Emergency responders arrived and transported him to Marian Regional Medical Center in Santa Maria.
Officers are investigating whether Reynolds was impaired at the time of the accident. The CHP has ruled out Canfield driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
