Gianna Brencola, 17, is facing charges of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, DUI causing death and hit-and-run for an Aug. 29 crash in which she allegedly killed Cal Poly student Kennedy Love, 22, and fled the scene. Brencola is due in court Thursday in that case.
On April 30, Brencola caused a head-on crash on Foothill Boulevard while she was distracted by her car stereo, CHP officer Jordan Richards said. In that incident, Brencola made an unsafe turning movement, and her Toyota Corolla then slammed into a Ford Focus.
The driver of the Focus, 56-year-old Cheryl Turner, suffered major injuries, including multiple broken ribs, a fractured collarbone, a broken sternum and a broken wrist. Turner said she is still recovering from her injuries.
A 16-year-old passenger was also inside the Ford at the time of the crash, and the teen suffered a suspected compressed disc and additional body pain. Brencola emerged from the April crash with a cut on her knee and pain as well.
Authorities did not charge Brencola for her role in the April collision.
In Brencola’s manslaughter case, the teen is facing enhancements in addition to multiple felony charges. The enhancements pertain to Brencola’s blood alcohol level at the time of the crash, which prosecutors say was above .20.
Brencola is currently being held in juvenile hall with her bail set at $195,000.
