A Santa Maria man stabbed a victim in the head, face and body during a fight Saturday night, according to the city’s police department.
Shortly before 11 p.m., a fight broke out in the area of Fesler Street and Mary Drive. Santa Maria police officers arrived at the scene and detained several individuals as they were trying to flee by foot.
Officers found a victim who had multiple serious stab wounds to his head, face and body, according to a police department press release. Investigators collected evidence that implicated Juan Salas Valdez, 26, as the man responsible for the stabbing.
Police arrested Valdez and booked him into the Santa Barbara County Jail on charges of attempted murder.
The stabbing was the second in Santa Maria in less than a week, with the prior one occurring on Halloween. Following a relatively calm first 7.5 months of the year, there have been numerous shootings and stabbings in Santa Maria since late August.
