Man suffers massive blood loss in Monterey County shark attack

A shark attacked a man who was spear fishing in the area of Pescadero Point near Pebble Beach Friday afternoon. The victim suffered massive blood loss but survived, according to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office.

While two off-duty sheriff’s deputies were fishing at Still Water Cove, they received an alert that a man had been bitten by a shark. Shortly afterwards, an on-duty deputy arrived with a medical trauma kit.

One of the deputies at the scene was trained in emergency field medicine and applied a tourniquet to the man’s leg to stop the bleeding. American Medical Response then transported the victim to a trauma center. His current condition is unclear.

A sheriff’s plane was airborne following the shark attack, and it came to the scene. The aircraft conducted a search of the area and located a large aquatic animal off Pescadero Point, which may have been a shark.

Sheriff’s officials worked with Cal Fire to evacuate Still Water Cover. Cal Fire personnel on a jet ski aided one swimmer back to the pier.
