Package thief caught following FedEx truck in Morro Bay

John Fort

Morro Bay police arrested a suspected serial package thief on Wednesday who blew his cover by repeatedly following a FedEx truck on its way to deliveries.

At about 11:30 a.m., a FedEx driver noticed the same vehicle following him that had also trailed him on Monday. The driver suspected the person following him had stolen a package that he delivered on Monday.

After receiving a vehicle description and license plate number from the FedEx driver, Morro Bay police officers managed to track down 32-year-old Joh Fort’s car. Officers found stolen property inside the vehicle and determined that it had been taken from a Morro Bay home.

Police then obtained a search warrant for Fort’s home and found items stolen from at least two more locations in Morro Bay. Officer are working to contact the owners of the stolen goods.

Officers then arrested Fort for possession of stolen property and booked him into the San Luis Obispo County Jail.

Morro Bay police are reminding residents to be aware of package deliveries during holiday season. Investigators request that anyone who has more information about the case or believes that he/she has been a victim of a crime call the police department at (805) 772-6225.

Fort is no longer in custody, according to the county sheriff’s office website.
