Paso Robles man killed after plowing through construction zone on Highway 101

An allegedly intoxicated 23-year-old Paso Robles man died Sunday evening after he drove through a construction zone  and into the back of a tractor trailer on Highway 101 in North County, according to the CHP.

Shortly after 10 p.m., Juan Carlos Diaz was driving southbound on Highway 101 south of Spring Street when he entered the closed off number two lane in a posted construction zone and crashed, according to the CHP. Diaz was pronounced dead at the scene.

Diaz’s passenger, 26-year-old Gasper Gonzalez Rojas of Paso Robles, suffered major injuries. Medical personnel transported Rojas to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center.

A CHP investigation into the crash is ongoing.
