Thomas Fire patrolmen catch man burglarizing Montecito home

Adam James Smith

A property manager, Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s deputies and Central Coast law enforcement officers assigned to patrol Thomas Fire evacuation areas teamed up to catch a man burglarizing a Montecito home Tuesday night.

At about 8:30 p.m., the on-site manager of a property in the 1000 block of Channel Drive in Montecito reported a burglary, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office. The property manager received an alarm notification, reviewed surveillance footage and saw a man walking on the property.

Deputies from both Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties, as well as Santa Maria police officers, arrived at the scene and then set up a perimeter at the home.

The property manager, who was monitoring surveillance cameras, relayed updated locations of the suspect to law enforcement. Deputies located Lompoc man Adam James Smith, 32, inside the home and directed him outside, where the property manager confirmed that he was not known by the owners of the home.

Authorities arrested Smith and booked him into the Santa Barbara County Jail on charges of residential burglary and for having four outstanding warrants. Smith remains in jail, where he is being held without bail.
