The Santa Barbara News-Press has again made news by coming to print with a controversial edition of the paper. This time, rather than stirring controversy with a headline, the News-Press has angered readers with a misprinted byline.
In Monday’s Christmas edition of the News-Press, the paper’s California section led with an article headlined, “Customers flock downtown to wrap up last-minutes Christmas shopping. The byline for the article stated, “By PAUL GAYZALEZ,” and the reporter’s title said, “NEWS PRESS FAGGOT.”
News-Press staff writer Paul Gonzalez, who authored the article, was contacted by KCOY. Gonzalez told KCOY he did not submit the article with the byline that appeared in the paper.
“I would just like to reiterate that I did not make that edit to my byline,” Gonzalez said.
Some social media users are ridiculing the News-Press online and speculating as to whether the paper’s editorial staff knew about the homophobic slur. The News-Press, which has conservative leanings, has previously been the subject of controversies, including a couple over the last two years.
Last year, the News-Press became the first daily newspaper in the United States to endorse now-President Donald Trump during the general election cycle. In 2015, the News-Press offices became a target for protesters and vandals after the Santa Barbara paper published a front-page headline stating, “Illegals line up for driver’s licenses.” Vandals sprayed graffiti on the News-Press offices and fired paintballs at the building after the headline ran.
