Santa Maria 13-year-old dies after being shot by brother

A 13-year-old Santa Maria boy who was shot and critically wounded by his brother on Saturday has died of his injuries, the city’s police department announced on Monday.

Shortly after noon on Saturday, Fernando Navarro, 19, shot and wounded Leonardo Novarro in the 600 block of West Polk Street, according to the Santa Maria Police Department. Officers arrived at the scene and found the 13-year-old in critical condition.

Early re[ports listed the incident as an accidental shooting.

Leonardo Navarro was airlifted to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for treatment. Officers arrested Fernando Navarro on suspicion of shooting a firearm in a grossly negligent manner and possessing a firearm when prohibited by a court order.

Santa Maria police are still investigating the shooting.
