Man succeeds in running away from Atascadero police

On the same day in which a burglar managed to run away from San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s deputies in San Miguel, a different suspect succeeded in evading Atascadero police officers who were chasing him. [KSBY]

In the Atascadero case, the suspect also evaded a K-9 and a law enforcement helicopter. The two pursuits were unrelated.

At about 9:23 p.m., an Atascadero officer tried to stop a car at Coromar and Curbaril avenues for a vehicle code violation, Sgt. Jason Carr said. The driver stopped briefly, but then drove off.

A short vehicle pursuit ensued, ending when the suspect crashed into mailboxes on San Andreas Avenue. The man then exited the car and took off running.

Atascadero police gave chase and set up a perimeter in the area. Despite receiving help from a police department K-9 and a CHP helicopter that was shining a spotlight, officers lost track of the suspect.

The suspect managed to break the officers’ perimeter, Carr said. Police called off the search at about 11 p.m.

One witness said the suspect may have been intoxicated. Police are still looking for the man.
