On Feb. 3, Fernando Navarro allegedly shot and wounded Leonardo Navarro in the 600 block of West Polk Street. Officers arrived at the scene and found the 13-year-old in critical condition. Leonardo Navarro was airlifted to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, where he later died of his injuries.
Initial reports indicated the shooting was accidental. Prosecutors have charged Fernando Navarro with involuntary manslaughter, discharge of a firearm with gross negligence and unlawful firearm activity.
On Tuesday, a judge granted Fernando Navarro release from jail between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. Wednesday to attend his brother’s funeral. The release from jail is conditional upon the Navarro family paying for two armed sheriff’s deputies to accompany Fernando Navarro during the five-hour period.
Fernando Navarro has pleaded not guilty in the criminal case, and he is due back in court on March 8.
