Santa Maria man who got away arrested after five-hour standoff

Earnest Lee Evans

A Santa Maria man who managed to get away from police during a vehicle chase earlier this week was arrested Friday night following a five-hour standoff at a home.

Shortly before 6 p.m., a Santa Maria police officer noticed the vehicle that had been involved in a pursuit that was called off in the interest of public safety, parked in the 900 block of West Fesler Street. While the officer investigated the vehicle, he noticed the suspect, 45-year-old Earnest Lee Evans, walk out of a home.

Officers quickly surrounded the home and made numerous attempts to communicate with Evans, requesting that he surrender. Evans did not comply, though two other occupants of the home exited the residence.

Police then  obtained a search warrant and entered the home. Officers found Evans hiding in the attic.

Evans resisted arrest, but officers managed to take him into custody with the assistance of a police dog. Officers booked Evans into the Santa Barbara County Jail on charges of felony reckless evading, felony resisting a peace officer and having two outstanding felony warrants.
