Atascadero council approves downtown mixed use project

The Atascadero City Council unanimously approved a mixed used project last week that planners say will be a catalyst for development in the downtown area.

Known as the La Plaza project, the development consists of 42 homes and about 18,000 square feet of commercial space. The project is located on a 1.83-acre lot on El Camino Real in downtown Atascadero.

Plans call for two buildings, one of which will contain 38 air space condominiums and about 14,000 square feet of commercial space. The other will hold four residential units and 3,749 feet of commercial space.

The commercial space is expected to contain restaurants, and city planners say the development can add a “24-hour presence” to downtown Atascadero. La Plaza is a part of Atascadero’s Downtown Revitalization Plan.

Builders hope to break ground on the project in November.
