Man dies in fiery New Year’s Eve crash on Highway 1

A man died in a fiery crash on Highway 1 near Morro Bay on New Year’s Eve.

On Friday, at about 7:20 p.m., an unidentified man was driving a Chevrolet pickup southbound on Highway 1. The driver turned left at San Luisito Creek Road into the path of Gerardo Aldama, who was driving northbound on Highway 1 in a Hyundai Sonata. Aldama hit the brakes but could not avoid the collision, according to the CHP.

The front of Aldama’s Sonata hit the right side of the Chevrolet pickup. Immediately following the collision, the pickup caught on fire.

Officials say the driver of the pickup died of his injuries. Aldama did not suffer injuries in the incident.
